Horse-based experiences support children recovering from trauma and injury, while also promoting mental health and resilience in prevention programs.

Horses came to the KIDS Foundation through an unexpected family tragedy. Sadly, in 2021 Susie’s granddaughter Bella, passed away from a rare genetic disease – Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

After the celebration of Bella’s short life, the family needed time together and decided to take a holiday. Bella's older sister Nellie, who is passionate about horses, asked her mum and Nan, Susie to go horse riding with her. It had been more than 35 years since Susie had ridden a horse, however, as it turned out that experience was just what they needed.

The power of the horse-human connection in this circumstance was indescribable and Susie believed it could have a place in the KIDS Foundation programs, addressing mental health issues experienced by children following traumatic events. Especially in the KIDS Recovery programs, assisting with preventing the psychological after-effects of living horrific trauma and injuries.

The opportunity to bring the horse-human connection into the prevention program was also recognised. Educators had reported mental health concerns in some children, particularly following the COVID pandemic. They were searching for programs that focused on mental health and wellbeing programs for children.

It is believed that being in close proximity to a horse can reduce our heart rate, reduce blood pressure, reduce the amount of cortisol (stress hormones) and it can also cause the feel-good endorphins to increase in us. Horses are very sensitive to emotional and verbal cues. The programs also demonstrates the roles in which animals, in particular horses, can play in caring for our mental and emotional health and wellbeing.

Recovery programs

The horse–human connection plays a vital role in KIDS Recovery programs, helping children rebuild confidence and resilience after trauma or injury.

Horses provide a calming presence that reduces stress, supports emotional healing, and prevents long-term psychological impacts.

Preschool programs

In KIDS Education programs, horses help children strengthen mental health and wellbeing. Their sensitivity to emotions creates opportunities for learning about self-awareness, empathy, and resilience - skills that support children in school, at home, and in life.

Tour d’Horse

Tour d’Horse is more than a slow-paced race - it’s a journey.

Programs

We reach 300,000 to 400,000 children and families through KIDS Foundation Recovery and Education Programs. The support we provide is life-long. Our people are of all ages because little people grow to become big people.
