From the very first time Simon sat on a horse at 5 years of age he never lost his love of riding. He was also lucky enough to capitalise on his equine experience in incorporating the love of this activity into much of his career as a movie director.
Simon established a reputation as a director who is known for his epic, stirring and emotional storytelling. He was asked by Steven Spielberg to direct the first movie shot in Spielberg’s six-part movie series “Into the West. Simon directed six episodes of “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” for producers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. He directed the hugely successful miniseries “Lonesome Dove” which was nominated for an incredible 18 Emmy Awards winning 7, including Best Director for Simon.
Simon has been involved in some of the highest grossing Australian films. As the Executive Producer of “The Man From Snowy River” and Director of “Phar Lap”, both released by 20th Century Fox, Simon proved his expertise in producing and directing.
Simon’s “Free Willy” for Warner Bros was a critical and commercial hit. Other features include “Young Black Stallion” an IMAX film for producers Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Disney. Also Disney’s much loved “Operation Dumbo Drop” and for Paramount Pictures “The Phantom” and “D.A.R.Y.L”. Australian features include the highly regarded World War 1 epic “The Lighthorsemen”, “Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles” and “Lightning Jack”.
Simon is a huge admirer of the KIDS Foundation and the work that they do and has been a supporter for a number of years. He says he was lucky enough to ride in the 2024 Tour d’ Horse and looks forward to riding in this year’s event, the challenge being to raise even more funds than they did for last year’s Tour d’ Horse.
