Why am I fundraising

From the very first time Simon Wincer sat on a horse at just five years of age, he never lost his love of riding. That lifelong connection to horses has shaped not only his personal life, but much of an extraordinary creative career built on powerful, emotional storytelling. Simon is internationally recognised as a director and producer behind some of the most iconic film and television projects of the past four decades, including Lonesome Dove, which earned 18 Emmy nominations and won Simon the Emmy Award for Best Director, as well as Phar Lap, The Man From Snowy River, Free Willy and The Lighthorsemen. Horses, resilience and courage have always been at the heart of the stories he tells. These same values are what draw Simon so strongly to the KIDS Foundation. A long-time admirer and supporter, Simon believes deeply in the Foundation’s mission to help children and families recover from trauma and rebuild confidence after life-changing injury. Simon was proud to ride in the inaugural Tour d’Horse in 2024 and again in this year’s edition, helping to raise over $1 million for the KIDS Foundation. Experiencing the physical challenge, camaraderie and impact of the event firsthand only strengthened his commitment to the cause. Now, Simon returns to the saddle once more as part of Team Thiele with his mate John Grant, both determined to help raise even more funds and extend the reach of KIDS programs to children and families who need them most.
